Bullets flew in my direction, and I dove to the side. The officer to my right used that opportunity to double-tap the offender on the left. The man dropped to his knees, the assault rifle firing a final spread as his muscles tensed before his entire body went limp. He was dead.

The second offender edged toward the back corner of the dark basement. “Stay back,” he insisted, pressing the muzzle of his weapon into the ribcage of a scared, red-haired woman.

“Take it easy,” I said. “Just put the gun down and let the lady go. We won’t hurt you, but you have to let her go.”

The officer to my left had taken cover behind a sideways table. He inched to the end and peered around the side. Before I could stop him, he fired. The shot missed, going high.

“Stand down,” I ordered, but it was too late.

The offender panicked. He pulled the trigger and darted for a second staircase I hadn’t noticed. The two officers lit him up. In slow motion, I watched his blood paint the walls, and then I was moving. I rushed to the woman. She gasped and jerked on the floor.

“Clear.”

I heard the declaration, but that was the least of my concern. The officer who took the wayward shot disappeared up the hidden staircase. A few seconds later, he returned. “Clear.”

“She needs help. Are the paramedics here?” the officer on my right asked. He knelt beside me, assessing the woman’s wound.

“Not yet.” I visually swept the room. “The offenders?” I asked the other cop.

“Both down,” he said. “Room’s clear. What about upstairs?”

“More units are sweeping it now.” I held the woman’s hand, feeling the tremors coursing through her. “You’re safe now. Everything’s going to be okay. Can you tell me your name?” But from the look of the wound, I feared my words might be lies.

Her eyes were wide with fright, and she trembled uncontrollably, possibly from pain or fear. “Ma-ma-martha.”

“It’s okay, Martha. I’m Liv,” I said as the other cop checked her pulse. “You’re okay. Try breathing with me. Slow. In and out. Just like this.” I demonstrated, even though calm was the last thing I felt right now.

“The oth-others.” If she kept hyperventilating, she’d pass out. “You have to help them. They aren’t safe. He’s going to,” she gasped several times, “move them.”

“Other women?”

She nodded, moaning when the cop pressed down harder against the bullet wound in her abdomen. He met my eyes. The situation dire.

“Where are they?”

She jerked suddenly. “He took them. He took us all. He found us. Made us promises. Lies. So many lies.”

“Who is he? What’s his name? What does he look like?” I squeezed her hand, hoping to reassure her. “Stay with me, Martha.”

Her breath hitched, and she stared at the doorway. I turned to see my partner frozen near the stairs. He had his gun aimed out the door. Until the house was secured, we didn’t know who else might be coming, and we weren’t going to take any more chances.
